Her message to readers is clear: self-awareness and finding a soul mate don’t always come easily.

“She had to admit: sometimes he made her smile and sometimes he made her laugh,” writes Young ( Don’t Eat the Baby!), whose storytelling and watercolor cartooning are spot-on in their comic timing. Clearly, Sparkle will never be the flashy showpiece Lucy dreamed of-but maybe Lucy isn’t the dainty princess type, either. Come to think of it, he’s as stubborn as Lucy, with her relentless insistence that Sparkle is really a unicorn and therefore should wear a flower necklace and tutu (both of which prove edible). He also smells like a goat, eats like a goat, and is stubborn like a goat. The specimen that shows up, however, looks a lot like a goat. This is a nice choice for holiday read alouds and for children who love unicorns. After sending away for a mail-order unicorn (only 25 cents!), Young’s heroine, Lucy, fantasizes about naming him Sparkle, garlanding him with flowers, and riding over rainbows on his back. To whom would you recommend this book? Fans of Sparkle, who resembles a goat wearing a blue party hat for a horn, will welcome this new adventure. A Unicorn Named Sparkles First Christmas Amy Young 3.41 255 ratings49 reviews From writer/illustrator Amy Young comes a sparkly, funny holiday book-A Unicorn Named Sparkles First Christmas, the perfect gift this winter season Its Sparkles first Christmas and Lucy is showing him how to celebrate. This is a nice story to share at the holidays that in the end reinforces friendship and love over presents and trappings. The illustrations are filled with lots of action and expression. The package is filled with rainbows and bluebirds and butterflies and all ends well. She realizes that Sparkle did not mean to hurt her feelings and as she puts the tree upright she finds a small package. Lucy yells “Go away! You have RUINED Christmas! You are not my best friend anymore!” Poor Sparkle begins to cry as Lucy apologizes for her mean words. Sparkle makes things worse by toppling the tree and eating the Christmas stockings. Christmas day arrives and there is a huge pile of presents under the tree, but Lucy has a meltdown when she realizes there are no gifts to her from Sparkle. The two go shopping and Lucy says: “Here’s how it works: I will get presents for you and you will get presents for me.” Unfortunately, Sparkle has more fun chasing birds outside instead of shopping in a toy store. In this holiday adventure, Lucy is excited to tell Sparkle about Christmas, especially the presents. What did you like about the book?
